Geotcchnical Enginecr'ng Gvaluation
Mukihc a Doidcvard Devclopmcnt
Evcrett, Wnshington
March 31, 2003
NGA Filc No. 366503
Pagc 3
existing residcnccs arc accesscd by gravcl drivcvays, and an asphalt parking lot is located adjaccm ro thc
commcrcial structurc.
Shallov standing watcr was obscrved in an arca approimatcly 100 fcet widc along the souUurn propcily
line, at the vestem sidc of the site. The backhoe that was uscd to explorc the sitc subsurface conditions
had difticulty crossing this area and Ieft ruts in the wet arca approximatcly one foot deep. A drainage
ditch is located ncar the castcm cdgc of the sitc. Wnter was fluwing ro thc north in this ditch at the time
of our fic)d mconnaissancc on March 19, 2003. Slight surficial seepagc was obscrved in a small area wcst
of the centrnl residcncc.
Thc site is vegetated with Inwns, field grass, young to mature evergrcen and deciduous trces, blackberry
bushcs, and brush. Thc ground surface within tlc sitc slopes gently to moderately down toward the north.
At the soutlienst comer thc ground surfnce east of the drainage dilch slopes down toward the northwest
with inclination as steep as 3H:1 V, based on our observations and the provided site pinn. Cuts have been
mnJe cnst, south, and west of the commcrcinl swcture at thc northwest corner of the site. These cuu
have inclinations as stcep as 2FI;1V, bnsed on thc provided sitc plm. The abovc slope inclinations are
consistent with thc slopc inclinations wc obscrvcd in thc licld. \Ve did not obscrve indications of
instability in these cuts.
Subsurfacc Conditions
Ceology: Most of the Puget Sound region was alTected by past inVusion of continental glaciation. The
Ist period of glaciation, thc Vashon Stdc, cnded approximatcly 10,000 to 1 I,000 ycars ago. Many of
thc geomoiphic fcnturcs sccn lodny are a result of scouring and overriding by glacial ice. During the
Vashon Stadc, the Puget Sound region was overridden by over 3,000 feet of ice. Soil layers overridden
by Ihc ice shcct vcrc compacted to a much grcatcr ctcnt tlian thosc that wcrc not A typical glacial
sequcncc indudcs rcccssional ouhvash sand, ovcrlying glacial till or difl, and undcrlain by advancc
outah.
'Ihc gcologic units for this arca are shown on thc Distribution and Description of Gcoloric Units in thc
4ukiltco Ouadrnn , 1Vashington, by lamcs P, Minard (US Gcological Survcy, 1982). Thc site is
mapped as glacinl till, which in this aren generally consists of a non-sorted mixture of silt, sand, and
gracl.
