�_ <br />PORT OF EVERETT <br />W MARINE VIEW DR <br />IMPROVEMENTS <br />CIP NO. 3-0-003-09 <br />PROJECTNO. <br />PD-WM-20006-07 <br />Placement of the HMA backfll shall be accomplished in lifts. Each lift shall not exceed 0.35 foot <br />compacted deplh. Compaction shall be accomplished by mechanical lamper or a roller as <br />approved by the Engineer. <br />HMA for pavement repair shall be HMA Class A, B, E, or F at the Contractors option, unless <br />otherwise specified in the cont2ct. <br />5-04.3(6) Heating ofAsphalt Binder <br />The temper2ture of the asphalt binder shall not exceed the maximum recommended by the <br />asphalt binder manufacturer. The asphalt binder shall be heated in a manner that wili avoid local <br />variations in heating. The heating method shall provide a continuous supply of asphalt binder to <br />the mixer at a uniform average temperature with no individual variations exceeding 25°F. <br />5-04.3(7) Preparation o/Aggregates <br />The aggregates shall be stockpiled according to the requirements oi Section 3•02. Sufficient <br />storage space shall be provided for each size of aggregate. The aggregates shall be removed <br />from stockpile(s) in a manner to ensure a minimum of segregation when being moved to the <br />HMA plant for processing into the final mixture. Different aggregate sizes shall be kept separated <br />until they have been delivered to the HMA plant. <br />5-04.3(7JA Mix Design <br />The Contractor shall obtain representative samples from mineral aggregate stockpiles, and blend <br />sand sources to be used for HMA production and submit them ior development ol a mi:; design. <br />Sample submittal shall include asphalt binder grade and sources, production mix gradation and <br />com6ining ratios of mineral aggregate stockpiles and blend sand that will be used in production. <br />This will be the basis for the mix design and job mix formula. The Contractor shall ailow 20 <br />calendar days for this approval and design once the aforementioned information and material <br />has been received. Additional time may be required if lhe proportions will not make an adequate <br />design as determined by the Engineer, or if the Contractor requests more than one asphalt <br />6inder source approval. The Contractor is also advised that production of the HMA shall not <br />commence until the job mix formula has been established. Adjustments to the job mix formula <br />may be made per Basis of Acceptance. <br />The Contractor shall obtain the Engineers approval prior to changing the source of asphalt <br />binder during the production o( HMA. Blending o( diHerent asphalt binder grades sources will not <br />be permitted. <br />5-04.3(8) Mixing <br />After the required amounts o( mineral materials and asphalt binder have been introduced into the <br />mixer the HMA shall be mixed until a complete and uniform coating of the particles and a <br />thorough distribution of the asphalt binder ihroughout the mineral materials is ensured. <br />When discharged, lhe temperature o( the HMA shall not exceed the maximum temperature <br />recommended by the asphalt binder manufacturer. A maximum water content of 2 percent in the <br />mix, at discharge, will be allowed providing the water causes no problems with handling, <br />stripping, or (lushing. If the water in the HMA causes any of these problems, the moisture <br />content shall be reduced as directed by the Project Engineer. <br />Page 13 of 50 <br />
