The literature reviewed included geotechnical atudiea for the Norton
Avenue Tenninal and Pioneer Marine Plaza projxts; pile driving records for 22 axagoml
precasi concrete piles that were recendy installed just south of the propoud public access
pier and moorage fualiry; and a published geologic map descdbing the wrficial so7s in the
vicinity of the proposed site. A complete Gsting of the documents reviewed is provided
below (see Referances Section).
3.0 FIELD AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS
3.1 FiELD E7LORATION
On April 11 and 12, 1996, HWA personnel conducted a site reconnaissance and
monitored the drilling and sampling of two onshoro exploratory borings (BH-1 and BH-2).
The borings were advanced to depths ranging from bout 61'fs to 66'Fi feet bdow the
existing ground surface nsing a tn►ck-mounted drill cig equipped with a cortinuous 8ight
hollow stem auger. The exploratory bocings wero located in the Seld by uping distancea
from adsting site features. The approximate locariona of the explontioaa pvfotmed are
shown on the Site Plan, Figure 2.
The exploratory borings were monitored and logged by a geotechnical enginar &om
HWA Soil samples were obtained at selected intervals and talcen to our laboratory for
further examination and testing. Field exploration methods are descn'bed, and logs of the
borings are presented in Appendix A.
Due to cost considerations, over-water borings were not performed. As a rewlt, the
offshore subsurface conditions assumed herein are based on an extrapolation of aubaurface
data from the borings we performed onshore and geotechnical work wmpleted by others
in the viciniry of the project site. Since over-water borings were not perfortned, aome
additional uncertainty about offshore subsurface condirions exists. This may rault in a
greater potential for encountering unanticipated subsurface conditions during conshuction
(see Section 6.0).
3.2 LABORATORY'ISTING
Laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples to characterize certain
engineering (physical) properties of the on-site soils. Laboratory testing included
96078RF.DOC
Hoxa WEsrB Assocures, Irc.
