PENETRATING THE ROOF:
To maintain a 2-inch clearance to the pipe on n rool with a pilch,
18 12 12S a rectanguler opening musl bo cut.
i i STEP 1: Determine Ihe center point Ihraugh which the pipo will
 penetrate ihe roof.
 i i
STEP 2: Delermine the pitch of Ihe roof. Pilch is I e distonce Ihe
roof drops over a given span, usunlly 12 inches. A 6I12 pitch means
that Ihe rool drops 6 inches for each 12 inches one moasures
, , horizontally down the root.
SEE
CETAIL A
SEE
DETNIL B
STEP 3: From 1he center point determined in STEP 1, measure
an opening 17V. inches wide (B 518 inches to each side of the center
point). For a rool pitch between ol 2 (Ilat) and 6112, measure an
opening 27 iches long (t0h inches above end below the center
point).
6112 to 12/12 pitches: Measure 26 irches (13 above and below).
 12It2 to 18112 pitch.es: Measure 32h inches (16Va above ad
„ below).
18/1210 24112 pitches: Measure 40 inches (20 ebove and below).
STEP 4: Remove the shingles around Ihe opening measured and
wl oul lhis section.
STEP 5: Add the next sections of pipe until the end penetrntes the
roof line. Check to see that proper clearances are maintained.
Extend chimney by adding seclions of double waii pipe until pipe
is a minimum of 30 inches above highest Foint ol rool cutout.
Termination end chimney must eztend a minimum of 36 inches
ebove highest point where it passes through root. See 10', 2' RULE
(FIG. 70).
10 FOOT RULE:
All chimney tertninations must extend a minimum ol 3 feet in height
above the highest point where it passes through the roof and must
be at least 2 feet above the peak of ihe root if within a horizontal
distance of 70 teet from the peak (See FIG. 10).
TERMINATIONS:
The fireplace and chimney system must be vented lo ihe out-of-
i xs•oM doors and must be terminatod with the listed round top or chase
eove terminations. It a chase termination is desired, reler to ihe
instructions supplied with the termination.
eow I
i
Y
CAUTION
w.:e i .. . .,.
. ..... ...
,-r..7 .,...a... ... _.. ..,,,.....
FOR ROUNO TOP TERMINATION:
STEP 1: Slide the flashing over the pipe (no firestop is needed al
Ihe rool level). The support wiros msy be aiached to tne ouler pipe of
the chimneywith screws, provided the screws are not long enough
to penetrate ihe inner Ilue pipe.
-4
IMPORTANT: Install gas line before finishing fireplace. It
desired, a decorative gas appliance may be installed, use only iron
pipe, 1/2" size, and appropriate fittings. When instelling a gas
line, a valve designed for installation outside the fireplace is
recommended.
To instalt the gas line, remove the gas line plug Iocated in the side
tirebrick approx. 2" above the bottom. The plug must be tapped
out irom thc finishe. side towards [he unfinished side. $ee FIG.
12A. Insert thc gas line parallei to the face. Fill any gap between
the gas line and the hole in the tirebrick with refractory cement
or commercial furnace cement. See FIG. 128.
1 CJ rvn .ara ....•
All gas piping and connections must be tested foi leaks
after the ins[allation is compieted. Be sure gas valve is
turned on. Appl y soap suds solution to all connection!
and joints. If bubbles appear, leaks can be detected
and corrected. DO NOT use a match or open fla ance
any kind to test leaks.
