Use FMI hearth extension HE 36 or a layer of non
combustible, inorganic material having a thermal conductivity of
K=0.84 BTU IN./FT1HR F(or less) at 7" thick. Example of
determining hearth eztension equivalent. This must be
covered by any noncombustible material such as tile, slate, brick,
concrete, metal, glass, marble, stone, etc. Fasten the hearth ex
tension to the floor to prevent shifting and seal the gap between
the fireplace irame and hearth eztension with a noncombustible
material (SEE FIG. 13)
HEARTH —
EXTENSIUNS SEALGAP
36EC stxoAo 3 3/4" MIN.
NUPIH _
{MBLP
VPOI[C10P
N O nrsm
NGFiII
OO NOT 6lOCN
INT/R[ OflIIL
uiv*m SEAL GAP
nnvuu
FIG. 13 — EMBER PROTECTOR
WARNING. Any gaps betwecn the nailing flanges
and the traming should be saaled with nomcombustible insulation
or caulking. nspect the fireplace joints for possible gaps caused
by shipping or rnishandling during installation. These should be
sealed with noncom6usible materiais. If [he fireplace is nount-
ed on a raised platform, insulate below the platform to prevent
ihe entry of cold air through the fireplace bottom by means of
conduction. The above steps are important, esper.ially if the
fireplace is instaled in cold weather climate.
