For all
other fans that penetrate fire resistive ceilings, ceiling radiation dampers(or an approved
alternate) should be detailed on the plans. Section 716.6.2.
All exhaust ducts from units are ducted continuously and independently to the outdoors.
Exhaust ducts within units only serve individual units and do not communicate between
dwellings. Under 716.6.1 Exception 2 of the 2006 IBC, the duct is able to penetrate three
floors or less without a fire damper. On the fourth floor ceiling/roof penetrations must be
protected with a fire damper at the ceiling membrane penetration to protect the
horizontal assembly. Ceiling radiation dampers have been added to all cabinet exhaust
fans on the fourth level. Dryer vent ducting shall have no fire damper through fire rated
construction per section 504.2 of the 2006 IMC. Duct construction shall be per 603.4 of
the IMC. See M1.1, M3.0, M3.1, M6.0, and M6.1.
