WAi111M6TON I
Dear Dr. Drumheller: +°'°'
, •,
y gust 13th1Ptter pT Moro,
, I have reviewed the comments made in our Au
with the City IIuilding Inspection Department, the City Fire
Marshal and the Chief of Police.
First, let me assure you that the application for a building permit
to remodel the Parific and Colby 73uilding has not been dnied by
the City of verett. 'Phe Uuilding permit application is currently
being checked by the City Plan Checker and reviewed by other
departmenta of the City to check compliance with the law and
ordinances under their jurisdictior in accordance with Section i
302 (A) of the Uniform 13uilding Code. The City Plan Checker has
informed me that the work contemplated is a nonstructural lteration 1
not exceeding 25% of the value of the existing building anG .i
accordance with Section 104 of the Uniform Building Code the
City cannot require the entire existing Uuilding to conform to the
requirements for new Uuildings as a condition to issuance of a permit.
The City Pire Marshal's office conducta a thorough inspection of each
Uuilding at the time the major renovation is contemplated. The purpoae !
of this inspection is not only to insure that tlie woric described i
in an application conforms to the requirements of the building code,
but also to identify those existing hazardoua conditions which the
owner should correct and may wish to incorporate into his renovation
project, lt sliould Ue recognized that the Fire Marshal has tlie
atrthority and responsi.Uiliiy under tlie Pire Prevention Code to
correct hazardous conditions by issuance of a Iire Marshal's Order
at any time that a hazardous condition Uecomes apparent to him.
By identifying po:ential lazards prior to major renovation it ie
possiUle to encourage Lhe elimination of hazardous conditions by
incorporation into the proposed project and thus save the owner the +
expense of a separate project that may be required ae a reault of
a rire Marahal's Order.
