i <br /> , <br /> � 1 The prime coat shall be applied over the full length of the project, and HMA <br /> 2 shall not be placed until the prime coat has cured for 5 days unless otherwise <br /> 1 3 approved by the Engineer. <br /> 4 <br /> 5 Should any holes, breaks, or irregularities develop in the roadway surface after <br /> i 6 the prime coat has been applied, they shall be patched with HMA, as described <br /> 7 in Section 5-04.3(5)A, in advance of placing the HMA. The Contractor shall <br /> ! 8 maintain the completed prime coat by blading or brooming with equipment and <br /> � 9 procedures approved by the Engineer, until the HMA pavement is placed. <br /> 10 <br /> ' 11 After the maintenance, patching or repair work has been completed and <br /> 12 immediately prior to placing the HMA, the surface of the prime coat shall be <br /> � 13 swept ciean oi all dirt, dust, or other foreinn matter. <br /> � 14 <br /> 15 When the prime coat application is not sNecified in the Special Provisions or <br /> � 16 shown in the Plans, the Contractor shali prepare the untreated roadway as <br /> 17 described above and shall omit the prime coat treatment. The HMA shall be <br /> 18 constructed on the prepared subgrade. <br /> I 19 <br /> 20 In areas used as r��rnouts or which will re�eive heavy service, the Engineer <br /> 21 may order a change in the grade to provide a greater depth of pavement. <br /> � 22 <br /> 23 The Contractor shall prepare untreated shoulders and traffic islands by blading <br /> 24 and compacting to provide a sound base for paving and shall omit the prime <br /> I 25 coat treatment. The HMA shall be constructed on the prepared subgrade. <br /> 26 <br /> 27 If the Contractor protects the completed untreated sur(acing materials to the <br /> 28 degree that the suriace meets the requirements of Section 5-02.3(2)A at the <br /> I29 time of construction of the prime coat or the construction of the pavement i(the <br /> 30 prime coat is not required, the Contractor will not be required to perform lhe <br /> 31 work specified in Section 5-02.3(2)A but shall be compensated for the item of <br /> i 32 work preparation of untreated roadway. <br /> � 33 <br /> 34 5-04.3(5)C Crack Sealing <br /> I 35 When the proposat includes a pay item for crack sealing, all cracks and joints <br /> � 36 Y,-inch and greater in width shall be cleaned with a stiff-bristled broom and <br /> 37 compr�ssed air and then shall be filled completely with sand slurry. <br /> � 38 <br /> 39 The sand slurry shall consist of approxima?ely 20 percent CSS-1 emulsified <br /> 40 asphalt, approximately 2 percent Portland cement, water (if required), and the <br /> 41 remainder clean U.S. No. 4-0 paving sand. The components shall be <br /> � 42 thoroughly mixed and then poured into the cracks and joints until full. The <br /> 43 foliowing day, any cracks or joints that are not completely filled shall be topped <br /> � 44 oft with additional sand slurry. After the sand slurry is placed, the filler shall be <br /> 45 otruck off flush with the existing pavement surface and allowed to cure. The <br /> , 46 HMA overlay shall not be placed until the slurry has fully cured.
