i
 1 5-04.3(6) Heating ofAsphalt Binder
2 The temperature of the asphalt binder shall not exceed the maximum
3 recommended by the asphalt binder manufacturer. The asphalt binder shall be
I 4 heated in a manner that will avoid local variations in heating. The heating
5 method sha provide a continuous supply of a;phalt binder to the mixer at a
S 6 uniform average temperature with no individual variations exceeding 25°F.

8 5-04.3(7) Preparation ofAggregates
9 The aggregates shali be stockpiled according to the requirements of Section 3-
10 02. Sufticient storage space shall be provided for each size of aggregate. The
11 aggregates shall be removed from stockpile(s) in a manner to ensure a
12 minimum oi segregation when being moved to the HMA plant for processing
J 13 ito the final mixlure. Different aggregate sizes shall be kept separated until
14 they have been delivered to the HMA plant.
15
i 16 5-04.3(7)A Mix Design
17 The Contractor shall obtain representative samples from mineral aggregate
18 stockpiles, and blend sand sources to be used for HMA production and submit
; 19 them for development of a mix design. Sample submittal shali include asphalt
d 20 binder grade and sources, production mix gradation and combining ratios of
21 mineral aggregate stockpiles and blend sand that will be used in production.
22 This will be the basis for the mix design and job mix formula. The Contractor
23 shall ailow 20 calendar days for this approval and design once the
24 aforementioned information and material has been received. Additional time
25 may be required if the proportions will not make an adequate design as
I 26 determined by the Engineer, or i( the Contractor requests more than one
27 asphalt binder source approval. The Contractor is also advised that production
28 of the HMA shall not commence untii the job mix formula has been established.
, 29 Adjustments to the job mix formula may be made per Basis of Acceptance.
30
31 The Contractor shall oblain the Engineer's approval prior to changing the
32 source of asphalt binder during the production of HMA. Blending of different
33 asphalt binder grades sources will not be permitted.
34
 35 5-04.3(8) Mixing
1 36 After the required amounts of mineral materials and asphalt binder have been
37 introduced into the mixer the HMA shali be mixed until a compiete and uniform
38 coating of the particies and a thorough distribution of the asphatt binder
S 39 throughout the mineral materials is ensured.
40
41 When discharged, the temperature of the HMA shall not exceed the maximum
42 temperature recommended by the asphalt binder manufacturer. A maximum
43 water contet ot 2 percent in tlie mix, at dischrge, will be Ilowed providing the
44 water causes no problems with handling, stripping, or flushing. If the water in
45 the HMA causes any o( these problems, the moisture content shall be reduced
46 as directed by the Project Engineer.
47
48 Storing or holding of the HMA in spproved storage facilities will be permitted
49 during the daily operation but in no event shall the HMA be held for more than
50 24 hours. HMA held for more than 24 hours after mixing shall be rejected.
Port of Everett FAWAT•GY09
Satnllite RaillBarge Transfer Facllity Flnal Port Revlew DraR
Phase 1:Pier Construction 55 75 Mareh 2005
