i 1 When more than one JMF is being utilized to produce HMA, lhe material
2 produced fur each JMF, shall be placed by separate spreading and compacting
[ 3 equipment.
( 4
5 5-04.3(10) Compaction
6
' 7 5-04.3(10)A Genera/
8 Immediateiy after the HMA mixture has been spread, slruck off, and surface
I 9 irregularities adjusted, it shall be thoroughiy and unifortnly compacted. The
10 completed course shall be free from ridges, ruts, humps, dEpressions,
11 objectionable marks, or irregularities and in conforrnance with the line, grade,
12 and cross-section shoNn in the Plans or as established by the Engineer. I(
13 necessary, the mix design may be altered to achieve desired results.
' 14
15 Compaction shall take place when the HMA is in the proper condition so that no
I 16 undue displacement, cracking, or shoving occurs. All compaction units shall be
17 operated at the speed, within specification limits, that will produce ttia required
18 compaction. Freas inaccessibla to large compaclion equipment shall be
9 compacted by mechanical or hand taroers. Any HMA that becomes loose,
20 broke', contaminated, shnws an excess or defiiency of asphal( binder, or is in
21 any way defective, shali be removed and replaced at no additional cust with
22 fresh HMA which shall be immediately compacted to conform with the
23 surrounding area.
24
: 25 The type of rollers to be used and their relative posilion in the compaciion
' 26 sequence shali generally be the Contrac'or's option, provided specification
27 ensities are attained. An exception shall be that the pneumatic tired roller shall
28 be used between October 1 and F pril 1. Coverage's with 2 vibratory or steel
i29 wheel roller may precede pneumatic tired rolling. When HMA Class D is being
30 constrcted, the use of pneumatic rollers will not be reyuired.
31
E 31 Vibratory rollers shall not be operated in the vibralory mode when the internal
33 temperalure of the HMA is less than 175°F without permission of the Engineer.
34 In no case shall a vibralcry roller be operaleo in a vibratory mode when
' 35 checking or cracking of ttie mat occurs at a oreater temperature. Vibratory
36 rollers in the vibratory mode are also prohibited on bridge decks.
37
1 38 5-04.3(10)B Contro!
39 iMA Classes A, d, E, and F used in traffic lanes, including lanes for ramps,
40 truck climbing, weavng, and speed change, and having a specified compacted
41 course thickness greater than 0.10 foot, shall be compacted to a speci(ied level
42 i+f relative density. The specified level of relative density shall be a Composite
43 Pay Faclor (CPF) of not less than .75 when evaluated in accordance with
44 Section 1-06.2(1), using a minimum of 91.0 percent of the reference maximum
45 denity as detemined by WSDOT FOP for AASHTO T 209. The reference
4C m?ximum density shall be determined as the moving average of the most
+ 47 recent (ive determinalions for the lot of HMA being placed.
