i
WETLAND INVESTIGATTON RESULTS
Sie visits to conduct field reconnaissance and site•speci6c investigation were
rnnducted on October 26 and November 4, 1988. During the field investigation, two
separate wetland areas were identified (see enclosed figure). One wetland was
identified in association with the Nonh Creek stream corridor. A second, isolated
wetland waz identified alang the eastern property line. Each of these wetland areas
are described below.
Stream Corridor Wetiand
Since the strcam corridor is located in the southwestern portion of the pro9e.ty and
occurs along the property line, only the eastern wetland boundary was deemed
necessary to delineate. Dominated by a red alder (Alnus n6ra) with vine maple
(Accr circinatum)occurring on hummocks, this we0and is characterized as a forested
swamp. 'Ihe understory is dominated by salmonberry (Rubus specta6ilis) with a
ground layer of skunk cabbage (Lysichirwn americnnum),Pacific water-parsley,and
slough sedge(Carer oGnupm). Along Third Avenuc SE,where the forested swamp
haz been affected by previous road construaion, reed canarygrass (Phafaris
I rwndinaceae)and creeping buttercup(Ranuncidus repens)dominates. The portion
of the strcam wrridor wetland that occurs on the subject property cnwmpasses
45,184 square tcet(1.04 acres). Acwrding to the US Fish and Wildlife system, this
I wetland would be classified as palustrine, forested, broad•leaved deciduous,
permanent.
This wetland performs several wetland functions. Due to the weAands direct
azsociation with Nonh Crcek, it functions to srore storm and tlood waters. With a
permanent stream and peary soils, the wetland also contributes to groundwater
recharge. As the srorm water runoff from the upper urbanized bazin pacs through
this wetland, the peat and Jense vegetation filters and processes some of the urban
pollutans. 7'he broad floodplain and undefined stream channel,in combination with
the vegetative cover, reduces the erosive effects of peak tlow events. Although this
portion ot Narth Creek has no fishery resource, the wetland contributcs to
doumstream water yualiry and prnvides an abundance ot habitat for some passerine
(song) birds. Contributing to the habitat values are the structural diversiry of the
canopy and understory,as well as the species composition diversiry. Generally, the
wetland functions per(ormed by the strcam corridor wedand are high.
Isolated Depression Wellend
7'he shallow depression that occurs along the east property line suppans a scrub-
shrub swamp dominated by spirea (Spiraea douglasir) with a dense mat of moss
(Sphagrwm sp.). Also observed were Pacific water•parsley, a scattered skunk
cabbage, and an isolated clump of slough sedge. Along the wetland edge lady fem
I
I
