SERS Public Safeh -1-1 Communication Tower
SI Report No. 704-05224-5
December23, 2000
Page 4
The general soil profile was as follows:
FILL— Firm sand fill was encountered in the upper 4 inches of boring B-1.
TOPSOIL—Two to three inches of brown silty clay to silty sand topsoil was encountered
at the surface of borings B-2 and B-3.
SILTY LEAN CLAY— Light brown to blue-gray silty lean clay was encountered in ail three
borings underlying the surficial topsoil or fill. The silty lean clay soii extended to the
maximum depths of borings B-1 and B-2, and to a depth of 20 feet below grade in boring
B3. This soil unit was soft to very hard. Moisture contents of the samples tested ranged
irom 12 to 28 percent.
COARSE SAND — Light brown, very dense coarse sand was encountered in boring B-3 at
a depth of 20 feet below grade and extended to the maximum depth explored (26-1/2
feet).
The soil profile described above is generalized to highlight the major subsurface stratification
features and material characteristics. The boring logs included in the Appendix should be reviewed
for specifc information at individual exploration locations. These records include soil descriptions,
stralifications, locations of the samples and laboratory test data. The stratifications shown on the
logs represent lhe conditions only at the actual exploration locations. Variations may occur and
should be expected between exploralion locations. The stratifications represent the approximate
boundary between subsurface materials and the actual transition may be graduai. The samples
that were not altered by laboratory testing will be retained fur 60 days from the date of this report
and then will be discarded.
4.3 Groundwater
Grourdwaterw2s encountered in borings B-2 and B-3 at depths of 21-112 and 14 feet,
respectively, below existing grade at the time of drilling. Groundwater was not encountered in
boring B-1. We anticipate that the groundwater table may rise during months of peak runoff.
Variations in groundwater levels should be expected seasonally, annually, and from location to
location. We recommend the Contractor determine the actual groundwater levels at the site at
the time of the construction activities.
4.4 Seismic Considerations
lhe site lies within Seismic Zone 3 wilh a seismic zone factor of 0.3 as classified by the Uniform
Buildir.g Code, 1997 edition. Based on the local geology and the soil conditions encountered,
for structural design purposes we recommend a soil profile at the site of Swhen considering
