Competitive Preservation Grants
2007 Grant Application
3. Describe the existing situation. (No more than 1 page)
Consider the following items in developing the response:
• What is the problem, need, or opportunity?
• What steps have been taken to address the situation and why have they not
been adequate?
• If a collection is to be preserved:
• Describe the collection, its size, significance and enduring value.
• Why is it important to preserve this collection?
• How is the collection at risk (see the criteria for evaluation in the
guidelines)?
• Describe the bibliographic control in place to assure wide access to the
collection.
• Are the materials available for public use?
• What other resources were considered or used to address this problem,
need or opportunity?
ittfiftiOlt and Evaluation
Thisqu2 n°s*O .0r =will. t :
• 510:04S#405of '0,40.t tt*I _*tY, ' l ate
■
agnif1 noe€t f t* ,a 'tt ® , 4 ,
• T ej' ** ,.. ,-.,. - 1 k. .the  %1✓.}
• MA' terl is arei all the > 00 4161*A °e; a 1i
for ar t'
• 0 1}, g ,y yea
• G #rtc Its ,5 1 Iii i r of if Is
Everett Public Library was a recipient of a Preservation Needs Assessment grant in 2005. All
aspects of storage and handling were monitored, and while original photographs, oral history
tapes, manuscripts, journals and other archival materials have been stored archivally for many
years, the library's maps are not. Chief among these rare originals in daily use are the Sanborn
Maps, in two hard-copy versions. While the library keeps microfilm copies and encourages their
use, the filming is in black and white, and referring to the originals happens frequently since the
color provides needed information.
These maps are one of our most used resources. Patrons access them daily, and they should be
stored properly. The Preservation Needs Assessment listed these maps as one of our first
preservation priorities.
Black and white microfilm and digital copies of these maps exist in other collections, but color
originals are rare. These maps are of significant value to Everett residents and property owners
for searching house history and providing information on "existing use" situations with the local
building department. Everett Public Library owns these maps, and the originals are not
copyrighted material by the Sanborn Company. We would like now to preserve the originals and
make color digital copies available for in-library and online use.
of 16
