Competitive Preservation Grants l
2007 Grant Application
The library's Sanborn Maps are currently not in our library catalog. This project will include adding
the complete MARC record.
4. Describe the solution. How does this solution alleviate or resolve the existing
situation previously described? Why is this solution the best approach? (No
more than 2 pages)
Consider the following items in developing the response:
• What is proposed to resolve the problem, alleviate the need, or take
advantage of the opportunity?
• What are the specific benefits of using this solution?
• Has other funding been obtained to support this project?
• Will the proposal have cooperative aspects involving more than one library
or other cultural organization? If yes, describe the nature of the cooperation.
• Who will implement the project and what are the qualifications of the
vendors, consultants, and/or staff who will do the proposed work?
• Will others benefit (e.g., will models for preservation or reports on
preservation techniques be developed that can be shared with other
libraries allowing them to develop similar projects)?
• If this is a phased step in preserving a collection, how does the described
solution fit into the plan for preservation of the collection?
Review and Evaluation
This question is worth 20 points Reviewers will look for:
• A proposed solution that is withinscope of'the guidelines.
• A propospd solution that is appropriate for the problem, need, or opportunity
described previously.
• Appropriateness,of treatments proposed.
We will first have the maps digitally copied and then placed in archival storage. The originals will
then be stored in our library archive and patrons will have access to these materials in digital
format, in addition to the microfilm copies presently in use.
Specific benefits are:
1. the care and safekeeping of two original color hardcopy Sanborn Atlases for Everett,
Washington
2. greater public access by placing these online at our website
3. The project will serve as a model for other county heritage organizations. Project
guidelines will be available.
Project vendors will be professionals (TO BE FILLED IN WHEN I KNOW)
10
6 of 16
