Plan Check No. 1328
Byron Backstrom
August 24, 1983
Page Six
*3. Exit corridors should iot discharge into an adjoining room. Corridor 544 dis-
charges through Room 572 and Corridor 529 discharges into Room 501. Section 3304(a)
4. Corridors 529 and 544 should have 1 hour fire resistive construction for corridor
walls and door openings should be protected by 20 minute fire protection assemblies.
Section 3304(g) and (h)
5. It is suggested that provisions should be made for the rapid removal of inmates
by reliable methods such as the remote control of lock, or by keying all locks to
keys readily available to guards during an emergency. Section 14-2.11.4 NFPA Volume
9. These doors should not automatically relock in emergency conditions, and emer-
gency generators should be available which will operate within 10 seconds and main-
tain power for at least 1 112 hour. Section 14-2.11.5-.6-.7
6. It is suggested that prompt release should be guaranteed by adequate correctional
personnel who are on duty 24 hours a day and the key should be readily available.
Section 14-1.2.1 NFPA Volume 9
7. The corriaur should be clearly defined in Sheet A-3.3. All door openings should
be protected by a tight fitting smoke and draft control door assembly having a fire
protection rating of not less than 20 minutes. The door opening into said corridor
should be maintained self -closing or should he automatic closing actuated by a smoke
detector. Gaskets should be provided at door stops to provide a seal. Glazing in
the corridor walls should be protected by approved 1/4" thirt, wired glass installed
in steel frames. The total area of all openings, other than doors, in any portion
of an interior corridor should not exceed 250% of the area of the corridor wall of
the room which it is separating from the corridor:
a. The central control Room 141 at the Secure Elevator Lobby does not appear
to comply.
b. All openings into "Booking Area" should comply if Corridor 131 is made part
of the area.
c. If the Sallyport 142 discharges into Corridor 146 and is considered part of
the corridor continuation of the "Secure Elevator Lobby" 139, all openings
ir, Corridor 146 should also comply.
d. The percentage of the glazed area appears to be exceeded in Rooms 140, 130,
101, and 141.
e. Elevator openings should not be allowed into a required fire resistive cor-
ridor.
f. Reviews should be made after the corridor is clearly defined to insure that
the required corridor protection is satisfied. Most of the doors on this
floor do not have any fire rating.
