Plan Check No. 1328
Byron Backstrom
August 24, 1983
Page Seven
8. A stairway enclu:.ure with a corridor to the exterior should have all openings
into the corridor protected with 1 112 fire protection assembly self -closing door.
Further, the walls of the enclosure should be of 2 hour fire resistive construction:
a. The shaft enclosure corridor for Stair '1 requires 2 hour walls (minimum
t equivalent = 4.2" which means that alternate cells of the concrete ma-
sonry units should be grouted) and the doors should be 1 1/2 hour fire
protection assemblies and no glazing should be allowed into the shaft en-
closure corridor. Sheet A-3.2
b. Stair enclosure V2 discharges into Corridor 157 and therefore, the portion
from Door 156 to the exterior should made to comply as shaft enclosure
corridor. Door 156 should be 1 112 hour fire protection assembly. Sheet
A-3.3
c. The basement barrier doors should have a landing on both sides of the
door. This applies at bath Stair #1 and #2. See Sheet A-3.2 & A-3.3
Section 3308(d) and 33030 )
9. Exit signs and directional signs should be clearly shown on the plans. Exit
illumination should be provided by two separate sources of supply. Separate cir-
cuits, one of which should be separated from all other circuits in the building and
independently controlled, should be required. Section 3312(b) and (c)
10. the side cuiling door in the lobby, Rcum 160 would be an unacceptable exit
door. See Sheet A-3.3, Section 3303(g)
11. The public lobby areas and the upper floors would not have a required second
means of egress it the doors to the inmate areas are locked.
12. Doors in any positions should not reduce the width of a required corridor to
less than 112. (Minimum = 44/2 = 22") Corridors 529 and 544 have outswinging doors
from both sides creating conditions which reduce the width of the corridor to less
that 22".
13. A hatch should be provided over the enclosed stairways that do not extend to
the roof. The hatch should be a minimum 16 sq. ft. inarea with a 2' minimum di-
mension. Section 3305(m)
14. An approved sign should be located at each floor level landing in all enclosed
stairways. The sign should indicate the floor level, the terminus of the top and
bottom cf the stairway, and the identification of the stairway. Section 3305(q)
and UBC Standard 33-2
15. The discharge door from Stair N3 swings over the front building line of Lombard
Avenue. See Sheet A-2.1
