• The Parks Dept voiced mncems about struchual soundness, vandalism
vulnerability and predator issues. They Eurther suggested that the structure be
designed such that a police officer checking the park at night rnuld easily see
through the structure from one side to the other from a distance with a flashlight.
• Doors that allowed the structuc'e to be closed dc locked up at night were discussed.
This was dismissed because they would require that someone t+e there to lock and
unlock them and because they might invite break-in attempts rather than
discourage them.
• Occupancy indicator lights were suggested, but issues of vandalism and expense
were brought up.
• The question of how a low-light environment can be maintained inside the
shelter without mnflicting with safety issues was discussed but not resolved.
• Galloway/Barker assured ali that structural soundness is not anissue and that
design with regard to these other issues would be addressed.
Ganaral S +ra ie¢nrs
• Ideally the buildings should blend in with the natural environment as much as
possible and have a varied surface that is attractive and functional.
• The Parks Dept. suggested that building materials need to address issues of
vandalism, future maintenance (can the surface be power washed?, etc.), and budget.
• Various building materials were discussed. There have been problems in the past
with vandals burning wood buildings. Brick buildings have also suffered damage
from vandals. Stone and mncrete were suggested as the materials of choice. A
mncrete block structure with a stone facade was discussed. A painted epoxy interior
was also suggested.
• A nhased approach was suggested to deal with the issue of budget constr.ints.
• L.andscaping needs to be far enough away from buildings so that it will not Qeate
a moisture problem for the buildings and damage roof, paint, etc.
• Other landscaping issues with regard to the buildings include: incorporating
plant spedes that will noe cause roof maintenance problems an3 locating plantings
so that root systems will not damage structures in the future. The Parks Dept. said
that they would try to obtain a list of native plant species that they have had success
with in the past.
Trailc
• Trails will be designed in such a way that they dissuade use by bicycles. A bike
rack and signs will also be installed for this purpose.
• The I'arks Dept. was concerned about the width of the trails not being wide
enough to accommodate emergency vehicle access. Space and other limitations on
trail width were discussed as well as were the number and distance of emergency
access points with the existing trail plan. It was concluded that the trail width wouid
remain as planned, although the Fire Department would be consulted for further
input on this and any other safety issues involved with the projed.
3
