3. Plantfnanrotocol
Balled and burlap plants were planted by first digging an appropriately sized hole,
breaking up the surrounding compacted soil, severing the biodegradable packaging
and placing the plant in the hole. Any shallow spots were packed in with topsoil.
• Plants over four feet tall were staked against the prevailing wind direction.
,
Containerized plants were removed from the containers, the root mass was loosened
and the plant inserted into the prepared hole.
Bare root plants were planted by inserting the roots into a slit made with a planting
spade and then tamped back in.
Emergent plants were planted by digging a small hole and placing the roots of the
division into the hole.
B. Permanent samplinp Iocetions
For sampiing vegetation, an attempt was made to generate random locations within
each emergent, shrub and forested community. Due to the smali size of eacl
community and the blended nature of the vegetation, random plots within eac'
community were not meaningful to this study. Therefore, the ten sample plot
locations were chosen at random by first dividing the work site into four quadrs!nts
(the ones in the original plan view drawirgs) and choosing two randomly generat«d
locations within each quadrant. 8oth the constructed wetland and the buffers were
included in the quadrants and thus generated random points within both wetland nd
brifst. In this manner, true random plot locations were obtained while still broadly
covering the intended area. This produced two sample plots in the eastern buffer and
six spread throughout the constructed wetland. Two .3dditional sample plots were
randomly located in the southern buffer sections. SomE initial locations were rejected
if, for instance, they fell in the middle of the interprative sleter, the boardwzlk, or
other non-vegetated area.
Each sample plot consists of a 50-foot (15.25m) diameter circle plot with the
randomly generated point at the center. Vegetation was mapped within plots by
measuring the distance from the center to the plant being mapped and then orienting
the plant with respect to its compass bearing. At the time of observation, the water
in the pools was turbid and some emergent plantings may have baen overlooked.
These will be indicated during first year compliance monitoring.
The ten vegetation plot maps are presented on the following pages. Vegetation
sample plot location are shown on the sample point location map (Exhibit 1, included ;
in the Map Section a, the back of this report) and are marked in the field by six-foot
15
