Mr.Bilt Way
Ju[y 25, 1996
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We wecti provided with a preliminary grading plan dated Febivary l996, prepared for development of
the Iarbeck site. This plan shows construction of an interpmtive shelter, restrooms, geenhouses,
nucsery piant plots, ant parking and driveway facilities. A small amphitheater and naturc trails aze also
included in the development
Thocgh floor elevations of thc swcturcs arc not shown, it appears they w•ill be placed neaz existing site
grades. We expect the structures ,vill be nlatively light, with foundation loads ef about one kip or less
per lineal foot along load-bearing walls.
A recently provided sketch, dated June 7, 1996, shows slightly rcvised locatians of the swctures. The
sketch shows reorientation of the restrooms and relocation of the interpmtive shelter, grcenhouses, and
nursery plant plots to approximately 20 feet south of the locations shown on the preliminary ading
plan.
Review of the grading plan indicates two pond areu will be constructed north of the proposed visitor
facilities. Pond bottom elevations will be approximately 522 feet and 524 feet at the eastern and westem
pond areas, respectively. Conswction oF these ponds will require excavation of up to l4 feet below
existing site gndes. The grading plan indicates pond excavation and landscaped fill slopes will be
graded to inclinations as steep as 13:1 (Horizontal:VeRical).
The rcconmenda;ons contained in this rcpoR arc based on the above design features. We should
review final design drawings to verify that our recommendadons have been properly interprcted and to
supplement them, if required. 1n addition, we should provide construction observation and tesdng
servica as needed during construction.
SITE CONDITiONS
We conducted our field investigation for this phase of our work on July 3, 1996. The following sections
summarize the results of our exploration.
Surface
The site lies within an undeveloped arca bounded to the south by Narbeck Swamp and to the west by
Seaway Boulevard. The site is accessed from Seaway BoUlevard by a gravel road leading eatt into the -
site and tuming south toward Narbeck Swamp.
Most of the site is tlat. A,broad, two to four-foot high knoll lies at the site's eastem margin adjaant to
the edge of the swamp. A steep, approximtely six-foot high (maximum) embankment lies along the
westem margin of the site adjacent to the edge of Seaway Boulevard. The site's southem margin slopes
vergently to the south toward Narbeck Swamp.
Project No.T-2736-1
Page No.2
