Workman Mill Road
Whittier, California 90601
Re: Code Interpretation
Dear sir:
Section 802(c) of the UBC requires sYorage and janitor
cZosets to be of one-hour fire-resistive in Group E
Occupancies. Also, Section 4304(e) requires openings
to be protected per Section 4306. However, Section 4305
does not specify a minimum acceptable fire rating for a
door assembly in one-hour fire-resistive construction.
Is it proper to assume the intent of Section 802(c) is to
proviAe a one-hour occupancy separation and therefore
require a one-hour rated door assembly?
Also, if we acsume that the storage or janitor room is
an exterior room with only one wall common to the
Gronp E occupancy and a door opening to the exterior,
does the entire room have to be one-hour fire-resistive
construction with protected opening, or only the wmmon
wall with t:e Group E occupancy as in an occpancy
separation7
On another matter, we are starting to see fireplac=_s
manufactuzed by American Heartland that burn gelled
grain alcohol with no chimney (see enclosed brochsre) .
The units carry a tag listing approval by Ferralab Engineers.
We have no information on either the manufacturer or listing
agency. We would appreciate any information you can give
us regarding ICBO's position on these appliances.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
t /
/
./
DB:jm
Enclosure (1)
