,7O/ Z/ImAim <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 4694 <br /> A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE PUGET SOUND <br /> REGIONAL COUNCIL (PSRC) CONTACTING THE U.S. OLYMPIC <br /> COMMITTEE (USOC) TO KEEP THE PUGET SOUND REGION ELIGIBLE <br /> FOR THE 2012 SUMMER OLYMPICS <br /> WHEREAS, a number of regions around the country, including the Puget Sound Region, <br /> have "Bid Committees"in place that have geared up for the possibility of hosting the • <br /> 2012 Summer Olympic Games; and <br /> WHEREAS, while a Seattle Bid Committee is organized and working on the 2012 <br /> Olympics effort,the City of Seattle's City Council expressed concerns over endorsing an <br /> Olympic bid,preferring instead that a more regional process be used to see whether such <br /> an endorsement is warranted; and <br /> WHEREAS, in the Puget Sound Region,the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) is <br /> designated both in federal and state law as a planning and transportation planning <br /> organization which works on behalf of the region's funding and problem-solving needs; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS,the City of Everett is a member of the PSRC and has voting status on the <br /> PSRC's Executive Board; and <br /> WHEREAS, the PSRC thus provides Everett and other jurisdictions from throughout the <br /> Central Puget Sound Region an opportunity and a forum through which to discuss the <br /> 2012 Summer Olympics issues; and <br /> WHEREAS, a discussion at the PSRC level could focus on such things as: <br /> • Potential increases in tourism dollars and economic development <br /> opportunities which could arise through hosting a Summer Olympic Games; <br /> • Significant Federal TEA-21 transportation infrastructure funding which could <br /> become available to hosting cities, as evidenced by TEA-21 provisions put in <br /> place for Salt Lake City,Utah,to host an upcoming Winter Olympic Games; <br /> • Opportunities for cities such as Everett to be host venues for certain <br /> participatory sports and events held as part of a 2012 Games; <br />
