along the slope area. Scattered hand dug piLs were excavated
into the slope to determine soil type. Areas of apparent slope
failure or erosion, and water outfalle were noted. These observed
conditions are graphically shown on the enclosed location/geologic
map.
The slope area was photographed from along the northern side of
the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks at 50 foot intervals.
GEOLOGY
The geology of the study area is best illustrated on the enclosed
geologic map and boring logs.
In general, the area is underlain by at least two sequences oS
glacial deposition and one sequence of interglacial (non-glacial)
deposition. The oldest deposit encountered appears to be the
Double Bluff Formation, consisting of glacial drift and associ-
ated advance and recessional deposits.
Generally the Double B1ufS material is quite dense and compact
due to averriding by subsequent recent glacial ice advance .
The soils vary from a well bedded sand and sand/ilt to a cemented
gravel to a marine (fossiliferous) drift to massive bedded sands
and gravels. These materials are locally deformed, probably
through past tectonic activity, and are generally found as
the basal material observed in the area.
UnconSornably overlying the Double Bluff Pormation is a thick
sequence of non-glacial sands, sand/silt and interbedded terres-
trial deposits including sporatic organics. These soils are
considered to be deposits of the Whidbey Formation. Within thia
local. the Whidbey Formation deposits are quite well compact
and dense. They generally consist of interbedded sands and
silts near the base of the deposit, and are cleaner towards the
upper portion of the deposit.
The majurity of the slope area observed, particularly the western
porti.on, appears to consist of the Whidbey Formation materials.
-3-
