PUBL/C WO//IfS
MEMORANDUM
TO: Deric Von Schlieder j O 3 0 S - O ( Ci
FRONI: Tony Lee
DATE: June 30, 2003
SUBJECT: Regional Special Events Center
Deric,
This is a follow up regarding the ceiling system `clouds' in the ballroom space. We are
concerned about the structural integrity of any particular cloud unit during a seismic
event.
• Uplift forces at the perimeter require further investigation. The bracing proposed
is located up to four feet from the edge of a cloud. What keeps the perimeter
runners (main and cross) in a rigid horizontal plane with the cloud? It is the uplift
potential at the perimeter of a ceiling system that is the basis of the requirement
for attachment to partitions.
• The verticat load capacity has not been clearly designed. More information is
necessary.
• Th analvsis should demonstrate that the flexible construction of the ceiling
system is accounted for to create a rigid unified assembly.
• The design may in fact be satisfactory as submitted, however the drawings and
calculations are not sufficieit to make this determination. An entire cloud should
be submitted showing all connections, spacing and materials used. As this is a
typically prescriptive product used in a non-typical application, we need further
information to establish an equivalency.
If you have any questions, please call me at (425) 257-8810.
