Interpretive pedestrian trails:
* An interpretive pedestrian-only trail is proposed along the entire length of Pigeon Creek
#1. A trailhead could be developed at the 63rd Street Reservoir, with signage to describe
specific features along the way. Interpretive signage could also highlight local efforts at
stream protection. Jackson Elementary School (Subarea 1) and several city agencies, in
partnership with the Adopt-A-Stream program, have worked for many years to reestablish
the salmon run in Pigeon Creek 1. These efforts include the development of a school
curriculum to teach watershed awareness, the construction of in-stream wet ponds that
improve water quality, and provide stormwater detention during high flows.
* Provide a trail to interpret the history of river travel, and highlight the importance of the
Snohomish River to early transportation.
Bicycle trails:
Conceptually, this subarea requires a loop trail system providing access to the entire area
for commuting and utilitarian purposes. Alternative routes should be provided to promote
bicycle commuting. Trails which will ultimately serve the southwest Everett industrial area
(subarea 3) must originate in this subarea. In addition, linkages should be made from the
Interurban Trail, where it ends at the Highway 526 interchange,to the Pigeon Creek
interpretive trails. A separated bicycle/pedestrian trail will be constructed along the
alignment of the South End Sewer Interceptor, which will provide sewer service between
the Silver Lake area and the Sewage treatment plant in north Everett. Trails through this
area will also furnish connections between areas 1, 5, and 6. The following proposals
support these goals:
* On-street bicycle lanes following Casino Road under Highway 526, north along
Commercial Avenue onto Colby Avenue, which is a designated trail for its entire length.
* Bicycle route from Casino Road via Beverly Boulevard to the 63rd Street
reservoir/trailhead.
* Bicycle lanes along Madison Avenue, continuing north along Glenwood Avenue, to
connect with Mukilteo Drive.
* Bicycle lanes from Madison, down Lower Ridge Road, west to Hardeson Road, accessing
the industrial areas beyond.
* A bicycle/pedestrian path along the route of the SE Sewer Interceptor, extending along
the Lowell-Larimer Road in this subarea, continuing south into subarea 6.
* A bicycle/pedestrian access up a utility right-of-way, crossing I-5 at the 75th Street
overpass, connecting to Commercial Avenue
* A bicycle lane/path from Lowell Park, north along the river as proposed in "A Pedestrian
and Bicycle Access Plan for Everett's Snohomish Waterfront."
Canoe trails
* Establish a series of river trail access points in Lowell Park and Rotary Park, providing
canoe launches to establish a canoe trail network.
W:\PLANNING\TRAILS\COMP96.DOC 15
