Appendix 3
Classification of Trails
REGIONAL/COMMUNITY/NEIGHBORHOOD
Regional Trails
Regional trails are those loops (bicycle, pedestrian, etc.) which connect county to county,
promoting a more regional approach to transportation as outlined in the Puget Sound Council of
Government's Vision 2020 transportation plan. Regional trail are usually multi jurisdictional in
nature, spanning cities and counties along a defined transportation corridor.
Community Trails
Community trails are loops (bicycle, pedestrian, etc.) existing within individual subareas. These
loops provide transportation and recreational access within and between subareas to form an
integrated system. Community trails link neighborhoods, schools, and parks to each other,
ultimately connecting the neighborhood trail network to the regional trail system.
Neighborhood Trails
Neighborhood trails are those linkages (bicycle, pedestrian, etc.) which connect neighborhood
parks, shopping, schools, and provide access to bus stops, and other facilities. They form the
basis for community connections
TRAIL CLASSIFICATION:
Pedestrian Trails
• Recreational trails
Purpose: to provide recreational opportunities, generally located in natural areas. These
trails are non paved, and non ADA accessible at certain points.
• Access trails
Purpose: to provide linkages to and between specific destinations such as schools, parks,
and facilities for the elderly.
• Sidewalks
Purpose: to provide pedestrian right-of-way along city streets and roadways.
• Separated bicycle/pedestrian paths
Purpose: to provide pedestrian access on trails that are shared with bicycles in a 12-16'
paved right-of-way, with ADA accessibility elements, not more than a 12% slope,
and separated from streets and roadways
NOTE: These are the same as Class I Bicycle Paths
W:\PLANNING\TRAILS\COMP96.DOC 37
