Appendix 4 <br /> Suggested Trail Standards and Specifications <br /> PEDESTRIAN ACCESS TRAILS <br /> • Minimum of 4' wide, with 2' clearance on each side <br /> • Smooth walking surfaces preferred: asphalt, gravel, wood chips <br /> • Limited to pedestrians only <br /> • Located on their own right-of-way <br /> • Located away from heavily traveled areas <br /> • Crosswalks must be provided when trails cross roads and streets <br /> • Apply standards for barrier-free access, senior citizens when appropriate <br /> PEDESTRIAN SIDEWALKS <br /> • Minimum 5' wide <br /> • Possible width increase to accommodate bicycles when adjacent to high speed traffic <br /> SEPARATED BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN PATH * * <br /> • Minimum 2' wide with 2' clearance on each side of trail to prevent obstructions <br /> • 8-10' vertical clearance <br /> • Paved surface preferred: asphalt, ungrooved concrete <br /> • Minimize grades greater than 8% <br /> • Trails should follow topography <br /> • Drainage must be addressed <br /> • Loop trails of varying lengths are desirable, whenever possible <br /> • Apply standards for barrier-free access when appropriate <br /> * * SAME AS BICYCLE PATH STANDARDS <br /> W:\PLANNING\TRAILS\COMP96.DOC 41 <br />
