BICYCLE PATHS
• Minimum 8-12' wide path with clearly designated lane (2-4') for pedestrians; extruded
curbing or paint striping may be used to delineate lanes
• 2-way traffic allowed
• Locate a minimum of 30' away from the edge of a roadway. If path is located closer than
5' from the edge of a roadway, a physical divider(vegetation, 4' tall wall, fence, etc.)
should be provided
• Grade separation is desirable at intersections with heavily traveled streets. The use of
existing crosswalks, new crosswalks, traffic signals, or other appropriate crossings should
be located at all other intersections.
• 8-10' vertical clearance
• Recommended minimum design speed--20 mph
• Paved surface material preferred: asphalt, ungrooved concrete
• Use bollards or posts at trailheads and maintenance access nodes to prevent unauthorized
car access. Reflectors etc., should be used on posts for night visibility
• Refer to WSDOT Uniform Road Standards for latest standards for curve radii, super
elevations, etc.
BICYCLE LANES
• One-way routes on each side of roadway
• Minimum 4-6' wide between the parking lane and the traffic lane. Where on-street parking
is permitted without a parking strip, 12' is recommended to allow adequate space for
bicycles to avoid hazards, i.e. car doors
• On-street parking could be restricted in areas where bicycle lanes take priority
• Bicycle lanes on one-way streets should be located on the right-hand side of the roadway
• Stationary obstacles such as signs should be a minimum of 2' from lane
• Maintain 1' clearance from curbs, drainage grates, etc.
• 8-10' vertical clearance
• Not recommended on long, steep grades exceeding 5%, or where bicycle speeds could
exceed 30 mph. Where bicycle lanes are placed on steep sections, additional surface width
should be provided to allow for safe passage of bicycles at higher speeds
• Design speeds should not exceed the speed of the roadway
• Left hand turns allowed only in designated bicycle crossings, or at pedestrian crossings.
Use appropriate signage to warn motorists
• Paved surface materials preferred: asphalt, ungrooved concrete
• Bicycle crossings at railroad tracks should occur at right angles to the tracks
• Bicycle lane designation to be accomplished with paint striping and appropriate signage
W:\PLANNING\TRAILS\COMP96.DOC 42
