If atypical situations are not present, then it is orssumed that nortnal environmental <br />conditions exist. Represeniative observation points are then selected within each plant community <br />type. At each observation point, characterization of vegetation, soils and h/drology is recorded. This <br />is accomplislied by determining the plant indicator status for each dominant plant located at the <br />observation point, ident'rfying wetland hydrology indicators present, and by digging a soil log hole to <br />expose the soil profile and examining for hydric soil indicators immediately below the A horizon or at <br />10 inches (whichever is shallower). <br />Once all three parameters (soils, vegetation, and hydrology) have been examined at an observation <br />point, a wetland determination can be made. A positive detertnination requires that all three <br />parameters be positive for wetland. If any one of the three is not posftive, the observation point is not <br />within a wetland. If all three parameters are met at all observation points, then the entire area is a <br />wetland.
