1 t ,
_
Subsurface conditions observed in the hand auger explorations consist of topsoil over granular fill
soil. The tonsoil at the exploration locations is %= to 2 ft thick and consists of brown to red-brown, loosc
to medium dense, organic rich, silty sand •.vith gravel. T'he topsoil may include reworked fill soils from
previous site grading activities. Medium dense to dense, ay-brown, silty, fine to coarsc sand with
variable amounts of gravel was encountered below the topsoil and extends to the depth explorad in both
borings. This soil unit appears to be fill placed during site development. Based on information from the
previous test pits, glacial till is expected to underlie the fill at a depth of,about three feet below the ground
sudace. The hand auger was unable to penetnte below the depths..plored due trefusal on gravel.
. Groundwater was not encounlered in the hand auger borings at the time the explorations were
completed, nor during excavation of the test pits in October l989. However, due to the dense namre of
the native soil, a perched seasonal groundwater table may fom on the glacial till sudace during the
winter/spring months.
1
During our explorations, Kord Kurisu, Architect (Project Architect) pointed out a French drain
that encompasses the perimeter of the existing building at a distance from the structure. The drain system
was observed to tie into a catch basin at the southwest comer of the site. Some standing water was
observed in the catch basin as the time of our observations. Because of existiag pavement adjacent to the
building, we were unable to verify the existenr e of a footing drain on the south and west sides of the
existing building at the location of the proposed additions. We anticipate, through experience other RSU
stntctures, that a footing drain likely exists at this site as well.

I
.
i
;
 SR8N211PROJECT1011005.O10FJ1STWNT RPT.DOC 2-2 LANWUASSOCWTES
