Mr. Elmer Johnston
March 26, 1990
Page Two
Soils
Hydric soils are defined as soils that are saturated, flooded, or ponded long
enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions in the upper
part of the soil profile (USDA, SCS, 1987). The Soil Conservation Service
(SCS), in cooperation with the National Technical Committee for Hydric Soils
(NTCHS), has compiled a list of hydric soils in the United States. The list
identifies soils series mapped by the SCS that meet hydric soil criteria.
Hydric soils exhibit certain characteristics due to wet, anaerobic conditions
that can be observed in the field. Such characteristics or indicators include:
high organic content, accumulation of sulfidic material, greenish or bluish grey
color (gley formation), spots or blotches or orange color (mottling), and dark
soil colors (low soil chroma).
A soil auger was used to investigate the soil characteristics present in
locations throughout the site in order to determine whether hydric soils exist
on the site.
Hydrology
Water must be present in order for wetlands to exist; however, it need not be
present throughout the entire year. Wetland hydrology is considere< to be
present when there is permanent or periodic inundation, or soil saturation for
significant period (usually a week or more) during the growing season (Federal
Interagency Committee for Wetland Delineation, 1989).
Indicators of wetland hydrology include: areas of ponding or soil saturation,
evidence of previous water inundation (such as dry algae on bare soil, high
water marks, and matted vegetation), and drainage patterns. Where positive
indicators of wetland hydrology were observed, it was assumed that wetland
hydrology occurs for a significant period of the growing season.
The property is located on the south side of 27th Avenue West. it is
approximately 150 by 140 foot in size, and slopes from east to west. The
northern half of the site contains a garage and a house. The property slopes
from the base of the house down to the west. The slope contains a landscaped
timber staircase and is planted with a cotoneaster ground cover. Below the
landscaped area, the western portion of the site is maintained as a lawn.
Soils and Hydrology
The soils on the property are documented as Alderwood gravell sandy loam, 15% to
25% slopes, and Alderwood-Everett gravelly sandy loams, 25% to 70% slopes.
