Ms. Stacey M. Wenger
February 11, 1991
Two other letters referring to wetlands in this vicinity have been prepared. A letter from Shapiro
and Associates, Inc. describes a narrow wet area at the toe of the slope below the Farrar House. As
shown in their sketch, this wetland is about 10 feel south of the south boundary of the subject
property.
A second letter relating to this pronerty is from Kramer, Chin, and Mavo, Inc., to Mr. Elmer
Johnston. This letter appears to refer to the same wetly nd described by Shapiro at the toe of the
slope, which again is outside the boundares of the subicct property.
Several activities have contributed to the highly disturccu nature of this site. According to the
letter from Shapiro (326/90), the original forest on this site was cleared in 1967. Since that time,
there has been landscaping on the steeper slope up to 27th Avenue Nest and continuous along the
slope below the Farrar House on the adjacent property. A number of fruit trees were planted in a
small orchard, and several raised garden beds were constructed. Around these beds and through
the orchard, the property is now overgrown by a variety of grasses. Because of this disturbance,
vegetation is likely to be a very poor indicator of wetland conditions.
Another form of disturbance took place shortly after the site was cleared. Perforated PVC pipe
was installed to drain a seep area (presumably at the toe of the slope on the adjacent property) with
the drain pipe going north toward the garden beds. This effort was apparently unsuccessful at
reducing the amount of water in the seen, but it may have redirected a portion of the flow.
Based on our site observations, we conclude that there are no :etland conditions on the subject
property. Soil samples were observed by using a hand auger to obtain samples from 8 to 12 inches
below the surface. Data forms four points on the property are included with this letter. Dominant
soil colors throughout the site are dark brown (Munsell soil color 10YR313), dark y0owish brown
(10YR4/6), and strong brown (7.5YR4/6). These samples were generally unmottled, r r had only
traces of mottling, and the samples were not saturated.
We did note, however, a rmall arcs approximateii 100 square feet in size with saturated soils near
the south edge of the property (T)aa Form No. 1). Because of its small size we did not include this
area as wetland.
Please call if you have any further questions.
Sincerely yours,
TERRA ASSOCIATES, INC.
Thomas R. Strong
Staff Scientist
TS:tc
Project No. T-1675
Page No. 2
