i
I Subsrfuce Ecploration and
Siltier Lnke Mall Banell Drug Store Getechnical Engineering Re,*ort
Eirretl, lUn.thrnqton Desien Recommendatiau
Isoil for frost protection. flovever, all footings must penetrate to the prescribed bearing
stratum and nu footing should be founded in or above loose, organic, or existing fill soils.
+ Where the fill or peat is considered too deep to economically extend the footings down to
suitable bearing, rock renches extended down to the densc to very dense natural soils are
recommended for toundation support. If unsuitable soils are greater than 10 feet decp, the use
o:pile- or pier-supported foundations is rzcommended.
ITlie trenches should havc a minimum width of 4 fee[ (or as designatcd by the field
enginecr/engincerine gcologist) and be excavated dovn to th. densc to very dense natural
( soils. 6ecause of the potential for caving, the ac[ual trench width may be greater than
specitied. [t would bc appropriatc to backtill t}e trenches as the excavatiun proceeds to reduce
caving. 7'he use of a Irger, track-mountcd bacl:hoe will greaUy speed trench excavation over
I the use of a comentional, rubber-tired backhoe. In order to reduce disturbance of He bearing
soils csposed in the trench, it is strongly rdconunended that the teedi of the bacl:hoe bucket be
covered with a digging plate.
To determinc when sui[able bearing has been achieved and to verify proper rock placement,
the geotechnical enginecr/engineering eeolugist must be present on 2 ful:-time basis during
footing trcncft excavation and backfilL A pump may be required to control secpage so tLat the
bearing level can bc visually detennined. Seepage enterin the excavation on an overnight
basis must be removed prior to commencing trench escavation the following day.
After de bearing stratum has been reached, the [rench should be immediately backfil]ed. We
I recommend the use of "railroad ballast" or 2- to 4-inch size crushed rock for backfill. The
crushed rock must be tamped into place to achieve a tightly packed mass; this may be done
with either a "Hoepac" rype compactor mounted on the backhoe or more typically, with the
1 bucket of the backlioe itself. Staging areas should be maintained so that the rock is not
contaminated by mud prior to placement in the trench. rquipment access to trencli locations
sliould also be maintained.
ISpread footings may then be used for building support when placed over properly construcced
rock trenches that bear on dense to very dense ntural soil (till). Footings that bear on
( approved rock trenches may Ue designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 2,00 psf
including both dead and live loads. r1n increase of one-third may be used for short-term wind
( or seismic loading. Ilowevcr, all rock trenches must penetrate to the prescribed bearing
stratum and nu trenches should be founded in or above loose, or;anic, or existing fill soils. In
addition, all footinss must be centered over the trettches.
lAnticipated setdement of footings founded on approved rock trenches or directly upon dense to
very dense natural soil sliould be or [he order of 1 inch. I[owever, disturbed material not
rcmovcd from footim trenches prior ro foting placement could result in incressed settlemen[s.
Dccemhr 30, 2004 ASSOCI.ITED E:fRTN SCIEVCES, /NC. 1
1 ,,,sve-sF.oarsc,-r.,aceo.vrnr. ur Page 9 a
}
