Jan Meston
From: mike miller[panther61108@yahoo.com]
Sent: Monday, September 08, 2008 6:21 PM
To: Jan Meston
Subject: historic everett
I will try and make the meeting on Wednesday, however being given less than a week notice about that
meeting I was unable to move my schedule around to fit it in. I have a different meeting in which I
need to be at so the chances are slim that I will make it there.
I have numerous concerns with my house becoming historic. Being that the house is old, it needs a lot
of work. We have been here only a few years but have had to put a lot of time and money into fixing the
place up, and we have a long way to go. Our pipes broke a year or so after we bought it. We had to tear
up the driveway and porch in order to repair it. We have not had the money at this time to fix those; that
was our plan for next summer. We have a 6 foot hill the makes its way around our property. We plan
on putting in a retaining wall in order to make landscaping easier. We started 3 years ago planting in
our yard for our landscaping with plans on making it maintenance free. Some of those plants are
working; some are not. It will take more work to get it right. Also, I was hoping that as our family
grows that I could expand the attic off on one side to give us more room.
All of these ideas and dreams that our family has are points of discussion on your historic project. I
would really not want to have to work with the city to improve my home. We've already dealt with the
city on a commercial project, and the stress from that ridiculous process is not one we want to go
through ever again. This is why we purchased a home that was not connected with a homeowners
association. We purchased our home to live our dream, not someone else's.
I do not understand how this historic thing works. It seems weird to me to get a letter saying that these
blocks are going to be historic, whether or not the homes in it are historic. I would rather see it as, if
you have a historic home in Everett that it be the owners choice to make it historic. You would find less
resistance, and would probably get more homes signed on.
What I am saying is, "No", I do not want my home to be historic. Yes, I will resist it in anyway I can.
Thanks,
Mike Miller
10/3/2008
