methods employed in year 1 (i.e. GPS location and sampling along 12 randomly selected
transects, recording vegetation changes via line-intercept sampling and recording percent
cover at sample plots) in order to document plant species present and the estimated cover
of those species along each of the 12 randomly selected transects, with data collected
from 10 sample plots along each transect (i.e. 120 sample plots).
Task 1.3. Data Analysis and Reporting
ICF Jones & Stokes will summarize the vegetation plot data into tables and will
summarize the line-intercept data graphically to illustrate the relative diversity and Year 2
location and relative extent of the vegetation communities originally identified during
year 1 monitoring(as well as any new communities which may have developed). This
data will be qualitatively analyzed and compared to the year 1 data for changes in number
of native and invasive species. Changes in relative cover of the plant communities will
be discussed in the vegetation section of the Year 2 Monitoring report (Task 6).
Task 1.4. Aerial Photo Coordination and Interpretation
As required in the mitigation plan, an aerial photograph of the entire site is to be flown
each year of monitoring. ICF Jones & Stokes will contact a local aerial photographer to
take a photograph directly overhead of the site from a low flying airplane. ICF Jones &
Stokes will schedule the pictures to be taken during late July or early August 2009 in
advance of the vegetation sampling. The photographer will provide hard copy and a
digital file to ICF Jones & Stokes.
ICF Jones & Stokes will utilize the aerial photo, coupled with the vegetation monitoring,
to map the relative extent and locations of the vegetation communities characterized
during year 2 (2009) monitoring across the entire site(i.e. both City and Corps portion of
site) and will summarize that information for inclusion in the Year 2 Monitoring Report
(Task 6).
Task 2. Hydrology Monitoring Year 2
ICF Jones & Stokes will conduct three low tide site visits to record water levels at the
staff gauges installed during the Year 1 monitoring to verify hydrologic conditions
relative to tidal cycle and inundation during 2009. We will also rent, construct PVC
housings, install, and collect data from 6 continuously recording water level gauges (ki-
r
+ 3
Year 2 Monitoring Smith Island Restoration revised December 4,2008
