vf
primary egress fish channel connecting the mitigation site to Union Slough at the northern
breach(no fish sampling will occur at the Corps portion of the site (i.e., the southern
breach) under this scope of work. Fish species observed and the number of each species
will be recorded. This task also includes agency coordination necessary to secure
scientific sampling permits for juvenile fish collection.
This data will be qualitatively analyzed and compared to the year t data and reported in
the fisheries section of the Year 2 Monitoring report(Task 6).
Task 5. Wildlife Monitoring Year 2
Task 5.1. Spring Year 2 Monitoring
[CF Jones & Stokes will complete the Year 2 wildlife monitoring by conducting the two
spring site visits in April/May 2009 (one during low tide and one during high tide). Each
site visit will include a 30-minute point count at each of the two observation points
established during the Year 1 monitoring, as well as a 30-minute point count at a third
survey station to be established in the southwest portion of the site. Survey times will
occur between sunrise and 10 a.m. All wildlife species observed during the point counts
will be recorded along with their activity. After the point counts are completed, the
biologist will walk a meandering path through the site during the low-tide visit, with an
emphasis on walking open areas that may contain animal tracks and areas of open water
that may contain amphibians. All species and sign of species (scat and tracks) observed
will be recorded, as will any behavior that is observed.
This data will be qualitatively analyzed and compared to the year t data and the wildlife
section of the Year 2 Monitoring report(Task 6). Wildlife species observed by other staff
during monitoring efforts will also be included to create a comprehensive species list.
Task 5.2. Fall Year 3 Monitoring (NovlDec 2009)
ICF Jones & Stokes will also conduct the fall wildlife monitoring visit for the Year 3
monitoring in fall (October/November 2009). Monitoring procedures will follow those
described above in Task 5.1.
r9
5
Year 2 Monitoring Smith Island Restoration revised December 4,2003
