C C
EN NIG EERING
Design Clarification Mmo
Nelson Residence
Project No. 07221.10
DCM No. 1
To: Clark Nelson, Owner
From: Greg A Guillen, PE, SE
Date: November 18'", 2008
gco-
During construction on ihe Nelson Residence located at 8522 9"' Ave SE in Everett, Washington, the
contractor has informed us ihat he cannot obtain Brm undisturbed earih where tha grade bearn is to
be installed as originatly cal!ed out in our shvctural drawings without excava6ng an adddonal several
feet.
Since excavaling ihese additional feet may significantty incxeasa labor cost, we would Gke to
recommed the allomative option as follows. We wiil inaease fhe grade beam depth from 8' to 17
and put (3) N4 bars in both lhe top and bottom of the grade beam. This wiil stiffen the grade beam
significan0y so that it has ihe ability to spread load from the columns above more effedively and
span between unstable soils below. This will slighUy irxxease material and labor fees for a larc,er
gradQ beam and more reinforang, but will be oonsidarably les than the extensive excavating to
achieve firm soil as required in the original design.
Please be aware lhat this altemative option will not eliminate grade beam failure due to turther soil
seUlement in the future and does not equate to the orginal desigci requirement of excavatiny to firtn,
undistu?.red soil. However we believe ft to be an acceptable aNemate given the circumstances.
Please wntact CG Engineering on how you wish io proceed.
250 4" Ave. South, SWtq 200, Edmonds, WA 88020 Officc 425.778.&500 Fac 425.77P.5538
I
