A properly
functioning system will remove solids from waler by trapping particulates in the porous struclure of
lhe filter media. The ilow throuch the system vil) natufally dacrease s more and more solids are
trapped. Eventually che flow through the system will bo low enough tc, requfre replacement of the
carlridges. It may be possihle to extend the usable span of Ute cartridges by removing sedimsnt irom
upstream trapping devices on an as-needed basis in order to prevent material from being r-
suspended and discharged io lhe syslem.
Site conditions greally infiuence maintenance requiremenls. StorrnFilter units located ln areas with
erosion or active construcifon slouid be inspected and maintained more often than those in fully
stabilized areas. lhe maintonance freyuency may be adJsted as additional monitoring infomlaliun
becomos available during the inspeclion program. Areas that develop known problems siiould bo
inspected more frequently than arcas lhat demonslrate no problems, particularly after larye storms.
Ultimately, inspeclion and maintenance activities shouid be scheciuled based on the historlc records
and characterislics of an fndividual StormFUler syslem. It (s recommended that lhe mainlenance
agency develop a database lo pmporly rnanage StormFilter mainlenance ptograrns.
Prior to ihe development of Ihe maintenance database, the following mainlenance frequencies should
ba followed:
Inspectionlminor mnhtenance
(timealyoar)
1 tand a(ter major slonns)
Majur maintonance
(timaslyeer)
1(excrpt in case of a spIIQ
Frequencies should Ue updated as reyuired. The rocommended inilial frequency for inspection/minor
mainlenance Is two times por ye.r (or the precast uNt. StormFiiter unils should be inspecled a(ter all
major stonns.
