I <br /> RESOLUTION NO. <br /> A Resolution Renaming the Everett Senior Activity Center <br /> "The Carl Gipson Senior Center of Everett" <br /> WHEREAS,the City of Everett adopted Resolution No. 5865 adopting an official City <br /> "Policy on Place Names and Name Changes"which authorizes City Council to designate <br /> the names of city buildings, streets,public places, facilities and natural features by <br /> resolution; and <br /> WHEREAS, said policy specifies that the Mayor, a City Council member or any citizen <br /> or interested group may request the naming of a public building or facility, and the <br /> Historical Commission shall consider such request at a regularly scheduled and <br /> advertised meeting and formally adopt a recommendation to the City Council; and <br /> WHEREAS, on June 22, 2009,the Mayor and City Council requested the Everett Senior <br /> Activity Center be renamed"The Carl Gipson Senior Center of Everett"to honor Carl <br /> Gipson; and <br /> WHEREAS, on September 22, 2009,the Everett Historical Commission held a public <br /> hearing on this request and extended the public comment period for written comments to <br /> November 20, 2009, in response to public requests; and <br /> WHEREAS,the city"Policy on Place Names and Name Changes" states as follows: <br /> Buildings or facilities may be named for an individual if that individual <br /> has enhanced the quality of life within the city. Outstanding service shall <br /> be performed in one or more of the following categories: <br /> A. Involvement in a leadership role in civic organizations which are devoted <br /> to community improvement. <br /> B. Assistance to the underprivileged, economically disadvantaged,physically <br /> and/or mentally handicapped. <br /> C. Actively promoted and directed community events and activities which <br /> have clearly added to the enrichment of the quality and quantity of cultural life <br /> within the community. <br /> 2 <br />
