season, thereby meeting the criteria for wetland hydrology. Vegetation, soit, and
hydrologic criteria are all met for the area mapped as wetland.
Non-Wetland
The non•wetland areas on-site are comprised of maintained lawn represented by
colonial bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis, Fac), velvetgrass (Holcus lanatus, Fac►, perennial
ryegrass (Lolium perenne, Fac), and common dandelion (Turaxocum oJjicinole,
FacU►. Typical soils in the areas mapped as non-wet h,ave a Munsell color of dark
olive brown (2.5 Y 3/3) with a texture of sandy loam. Soils were found to be dry at
lhe time of our October 2003 site inves[igation.
Soils sampled in the areas mapped as non-wetland do not appear to be flooded,
ponded, or saturated long enough during the growing season to d2ve:op anaerobic
conditions in the upper part, and therefare do not appear to meet wetland soils
criteria.
There were no surface indicators of saturation or inundation in ne non-we:land
areas. It appears that the areas mapped as non•wetland are saturated for a period
less than 5% of the growing season and therefore do not meet the wetland
hydrology criteria.
Because direct hydrologic indicators are lacking, and neither hydric soils nor
hydrophyfic vegetation are present in the areas mapped as wetland, it appears [ha!
they do not meec criteria for wetlands.
WE?LAND FUNCTIONS AND VALUES
Methodology
The melhodology for this func[ions and values assessment is based on professional
opinion developed tlirough past field analyses and interpretation. This assessment
pertains specificatly to the on-site wetland, but is typical (or assessments of similar
systems common to western Washington.
Functions and Values Components
Wetlands in western Washington perform a variety of ecosystem functions.
Included among the most important functions provided by wetlands are stormwater
storage and flood flow attenuation, water quality improvement, and fish and wildlife
liibitat. An assessment of these functions for the project site are provided below.
EXISTI:G CONDITIONS
The off-site wetlands provide a moderate to high level of functions and values. As a
result of its large size, forested vegetation, and associa[ion with Swamp Creek,
Wetland A provides good value for all functions. Wetland B provides moderate value
for all functions, these are limited by its small size and proximity to development.
5
