Scptember 16, 1992
Everett Pire Dcparuncnt
2811 Oakes Svicet
Gverett, WA 9R201
Atm: Mr. Eiob Schaller
i iro tarshall
Dear Me Schaller:
od
SEP 2 1 1992
Fire Department
Barly in July, I was finall able to realize a li(c-long goal, and signcd a purchase agreement
for a ncw hume. Although the house is small, just over 1,000 syuarc fcet, it has a 2 car
garage and a µurkable (loor plan my small family will love. Thcre's a panvy and laundry
area (or ihe ife, my son «ill havc his own room, and cve a nice back }•ard for Chcster, our
dog. 1'm a native 1Vashingtonian, bom and raiscd in Anacortcs. 1'vc txen ::mployed at
TRAMCO on Painc ficld for IS years.
Our home is being construced by lhe Trcdway Corporation, and during the pemiit process,
Kathy Tredway discovered that your departnxm myuired a sprinkicr system be installed. 5he
proceeded to obtain a bid for the systcm from Robinson Plumbing. The cost o( the system
required extra funds from me to allow thc project to continue.
I hd a conversation with the people at Public \'orl:s conceming costs for the exva fire
service, and was infomied, much to my dismay, that the fire service and standard service
reyuire that 1 separate wnter meters, and 1 Nould bc assessed a monthly fee for Ue fire scrvice
merer, even though no water is used. Thcir potition is that the meter must be read by their
people, therefore a bill must lx generated. This makes m rcsidential fire protection rale high,
as I pay tbr it with my taxes, and again with my bi-monthly water bill. This infomation all
came from Mr. Myron Tollefson of Public Works.
Today I had the plcasure of inecting a(cllow from }our office. Sam Prcston was very
infomiative about the issue, and explaincd that the reason that the sprinkler system was
specified on the building pcnnit was not duc to dic distance from a fire hydrant, but due to
nccess.
It seer.s there is concern, thnt in thc cvcnt o( a fire, Uiat the eyuipment dispalchcd could not
readil} tum around nt the sile. I asked Sam what I coulA do to solve the problem, and he
recommenAed that 1 write you this Icuer, and present my appenl.
Please understand that I do want a safe cnvironment for my family, and I also want to cnsure
that your fire fighters also can react in a manner that does not jcopardize their safety on the
job.
