 October 28 1987 7 873_1317
contractor should implement prctective measures. Thr.se measures sfiou?d
include, but not be limited to, the placenent of either a thin layer of pea
gravel, crushed rock, or a lean concrete mud mat over the prepared and
' approved subgrade.
If ear[hworks can be completed during the anticipated period of lower
. groundwater in the drier sumner months of the year, ae rer.ommend the F•,11 ad
Peat and any other soft or disturbed soils encouitered be removed am! replaced
with an onsite or imported, caarse grained, free draining granular cmpacted
fill. The excavations made in the removal and replacement process snould
extend outside the footing line a dlstance equal to tlie depth of the
excavation.
If insufficient ansite fill is available, we recommend a clean free draining
sand and gravel imported fill material with less than five percent passing t,he
No. 200 sieve, based on the minus 3/4-inch fraction be used. This type of
material can typically be placed and compacted in wet weather conditions.
The fill should be placed in maximum eight-inch loose lifts and compacted to
at least 95 percent of the ASTM D 1557 78 laboratory standard. We recommend a
large steel wheeled vibratory roller be used to compact the fill. If density
tests taken in the fill indicate compaction is not be being achieved, the fill
should be scarified, moisture conditioned, and recompacted.
7. RpINAGE CONTROL MEASURES
Due to the moisture sensitivity of the site soils, we recommend both short-
and long-term drainage measures be incorporated into the project design and
construction. Surface runoff can be controlied during canstruction by careful
excavation practices. Typically, these include the construction af shallow
upgrade perimeter drainage ditches or low earthen berms and the use of
temporary sumps to collect seepage and prevent water from damaging exposed
subgrades. All collected Nater should be directed under control to a positive
and permanent discharge system such as the storm sewar.
8. USE OF THIS REPORT '
This report has been prepared exclusively for the use of The Axelrod Company
and their consultants for the specific application to this project. Once the
proposed site development plans are finalized, we should be contacted to
review aur conclusions and recomnendations. The exploration has been
performed in general accordance with locally accepted geotechnical egineering
practice to provide information for the area explored.
There are possible variations in the subsurface conditions between the
explorations and in the groundwater conditions with time. We recommend a
cantingency for unanticipated conditions be included in the construction
schedule and budget. Further, we recommend that we be retained to perform
Golder Associates
