ARCHEOLOGICAL AREP.S AND HISmORIC SI:ES <br />INTRODUCTION <br />Archeological areas, ancient vil2ages, military forta� old aettlers <br />homes, ghoet towns, and traila were often located on shorelines <br />becauae of the proxlmity of food reaources fsnd because water pro- <br />vided an important meane of tran�portation. These sites are non- <br />renewable re�ources and many are Sn danger of being lost through <br />present day changes in land use and urbanization. Becauae of their <br />rarity and the educational link they provide ta our past, these <br />locationa should be preserved. <br />POLICIES <br />1. Conault with profeasional archeologists to identify areas containing <br />potentially valuable archeological data� and to eatablish procedures <br />for salvaging the data. <br />2. Preserve wherever feasible, sites with high value for scientific <br />study and public observationa. <br />j. Attach a special condition to ahoreline permit� in areaa knovm <br />to contain archeological data providing far eite inepaction <br />and evaluation by an areheologiat to insure that poeaible <br />archeological data are properly aalva�ed. <br />4. Require all ahoreline permiGa to contain a special provision <br />which requirea developers to notify local governments if any <br />poaslble archeological data are uncovered during ezcavations. <br />5. Insure that all applicable provisiona of the 17ational Historic <br />Preaervation Act of 1966 and the State Historic Preaervetion <br />Act (RCW 43•51) are complied with. <br />REGULATIONS <br />General <br />1. Al1 shoreline permita ehall contain a special provision requiring <br />permitteee to notify Snohomish County if any gosaible archeological <br />data are uncovered during excavation or development. Failure <br />to comply with thie requirement shall be conaidered a violation <br />of the Subatantial Development Perntit and shall subject the <br />permittee to legal action as apecified by Title 21� Snohomish <br />County Code. <br />2.
