About half of tli
piles inspected appear to be untreated and some sho•i evidence of decay.
The piles which appeared to be treated had a thin treatment of creosote
preservative. This appears to be painted on rather than applied through
ressure treatment as would be normal for piles intended to resist decay
nn a long term basis. At least one of the piles for the east building
appears to have settled and pulled away from the remainder of the foot-
ing.
There was much evidence cf shimmi, shorin9 and reconstruction
ro maintain support of those portion; of the buildings vihich nere
supported on spread footings. Exterir poches appear to have settled
up to 16 inches below adjacent pile supported sections of thc buildinr.
Lar9e cracks, repaving and a broken retainin9 wall give evidence of
differential settlement bet:en the yard and parking areas and buildings.
It appears that utilities in the fill also have becn draged dovnward,
and in the east building a section of the foundation was cut a•iay
ipparently to prevent interference between the settlin9 sewrr line ar.d
the foundation.
Our testin9 of the peat indicates that it is the most compressible
orqanic material which this writer has encour.tered in 20 years of
experience. [3uth primary, which is the most rapid and isually larger
portion of peat settlement, and secndary settlemei° :,pear to be large.
Our calculations indicated a remaining settlement of only ? inches, how-
ever, this is based on assumptios concernin9 the duration of existing
fill loads and does not fully ta4;e secondary compression or unknown
phenomena into account. 41e expec!. that settlement will be more than 3",
and will euntinue for vars.
