Conifer Apartments September a, 1976 Page Three
used to drive the sampler into thc soils. Thc number of blows required
to drive the sampler (penetration resistance) is indicated adjacent to
the sample notation on the logs.
The samples were taken to our l:boratory, examined, and selected
samples tested to evaluate strength, com, ressibility, moisture content,
and dry density. Direct shear stren9th and consolidatien test results
are presented on Plates 10,11 and 12. The moisture content and density,
results for the samples tested are presented on the logs and test data
plates.
'io further assist in evaluating the extent of compressible soils,
we discussed the building construction and the difficulties with Mrs.
Po9ue, the Resident Fianager of the apartments, and made a thorough inspec-
ticn of the apartment interiors and foundations. The results of our
inspection of the interiors were inconclusive apparently because of
irregularity in building support and because of Lhe repairs. However, we
riere able to estimate approximate settlements that have occurred by
observing the amount of movement of soil away from pile supported sections
of the foundation. Contours indicating the observed settlement are shovm
on Lhe Plot Plan.
FIIlDINGS
Our e>:ploi-atior;s encountcrec' fill of loose silty sand with
nravel up to a maxmum of ahout 12; feet thick in borin9 four, south-
east of the buildin9s. The fill decreases in thickness in the northerly
direction. In tfie southern portions of the building, the fill is undor-
lain by very soft and hi9hly compressible pcat up to about 12 feet thick
in boring.Opc southwest of the bldin9s. In borings One and Four thc
cat is underlain by a few feet of loose sand or soft clayey silt. 1111
of the borings, encountered a dense sand with gravel below the soft and
compressible soils or fill. In doring Four the dense sand tvith gravcl
was underlain by veiy dense and hard 9lacial till. All of the borin9s
werr terminatnd in soils o-hich apeicd to havo bcen overridlen Ly thc
