Conifer Apartments September 8, 1976
Page 5even
of angle joints be provided so that a hinged connection is effected
in the sewer line between the building and fi;l,
At entrances to the building there probably wi11 be continued
settlement 4ihich wi11 tend to exaggerate the rise of the step from
the exterior to the building. We recommend that there be a short level
section or porch at the entrance. Then B or 9 inches of settlement
can occur without creatin9 an excessive rise. 4Je expect that this
should be an adequate allowance for future settlement.
COJSTRUCTIOP CONSIDERATIOWS
For construction convenience it appears necessary to remove the
carports and porches of the buildings and keep tenant parkin9 away from
tfie area. The auger cast method of construction is not particularly
neisy except for motors, most of which could be located to the south,
array from the buildin9s and tenants. Wd anticipate that it will not be
necessary to enter the buildin9s or to relocate the tenants during
construction.
Great care is necessary in the use of the auger cast pile
construction method with the soils on this site. As already mentioned,
the peat soils are soft. If th auger is withdrawn too rapidly or
if the cement grout pressure falls too lov, the pile -iill "pinch" and
be diseontinuous. Only equipment which can pull the auger and pump
9rout simltaneously should be usad and thc equipment should be capable
of continuous and adjustble witlidrawal rate. P. meter should be pro-
vided so that the amount of grout placed can be continuously observed.
Diming operation, the withdrawal rate and grout pumpin9 rate should be
monitored so that high 9rout pressures are continuously maintained. Carc
and exper•ience are necessary to see that the amount of grout pmped
is neither to small nor to great. 4Je recomnend that the grout piace-
ment should equal taice the computed volume of the pile based on its
nominal diameter.
Pile len9ths will vary 1'rom the 20 foot minimum reconended,
up to a maximuc of about 30 feet near borin9 One. The lenqths should
