The swamp area on the west
site was covered by up to approximately four (4) feet of watee
wliicli was gently flowing from soutti to north. In addition,
shallow surtace water was also observed in wheel ruts on the
destern site.
Subsurface
The two sites are, generally, imme3iately underlain by
approximately three (3) to twenty-Eour (24) inches'of topsoil,
and the test pits encountered relatively similar conditions on
both sites.
East Site
Oeneath the surficial topsoil layer the eastern site i
underlain by one (1) to tliree (3) feet oE loose to medium dense,
reddisti•-tn to tan, moist to saturaled silty sand with gravel.
Test Pits TP-4 and TP-5 at Che west end of Uuilding 3 encounter-
ed approximately two (2) feet of loose, wet, Eill overlying the
topsoil layer. Underlying tle silly sand stratum, and to the
depths erplored, all tlie test pils on tliis site encountered
dense gravelly, ailty sands containing occasional cobbles,
(glacial till). These till soils exlend to considerable deptli
beneath the deptl explored.
West Site
With the following xeptions the western site is s?milar
to the east site. Test Pit TP-1 in the northwest corner of the
slte encountered approximalely six (G) teet of loose, wet,
gravelly, silty sand fill. 'flie lower two (2) Leet oE fill
mainly consisted of mixed wood debris and topsoil. Delow the
fill is about two (2) feet ot loosc gravelly. silty sand with
clay, organics and topsoil. Oenealh this ]ayer the test pit
encountered, and was terminaled'in, a dene gray gravelly silty
sand till material. Test Pits TP-21 and TP-2 near tlie south-
west corner oE Building 4 encountered surficial loose, wet,
gravelly, silty sand fills conlaining clay pockets and aspha
hunks. Underlying tlie fill in TP-21 was n sliallow layer oE
red-tan, medium dense silty gravelly sand tlien, to the depth ,
explored, a dense, gray-tan, gravelly silty sand till. Beneath
the surficial fills in TP-20 a l:wo (2) fot layer of soft, brown .
peaty organic silt, overlying about three (3) feet of soft,
brown, fibrous peat, was encounlered. The peat was underlain by
a medium dense brown sandy gravel, to the depth explored. ,
[arlh Consuhan:s, Inc.
