R.L. MORRISON ENGINEERING CO.
Civil and Structural Engineering
Commercial- Industrial • Waterfront
24 August 1999
513.01
Greg Thayer
Cascade Coffee Inc.
711- 100th Street SE
Everett WA 98208
RE: New Roasting Plant
Transformer Support
Dear Greg:
This letter is in response to your question regarding support of a new electrical transformer from an
existing roof beam. I understand that the transformer weighs about 400 pounds and is to be attached to an
existing 6-314 x 48 glue -lam roof beam no closer than 3 feet and no further than 4 feet south of Column C7.
Further, the transformer will be attached using 4 bolts spaced in a square pattem, 30 inches apart
horizontally with the top row at 9 inches below the lop of the beam and the bottom row 25 inches below
that (or 14 inches above the bottom).
The additio tat load due the transformer, the location of the transformer, and the location of the mounting
bolts should cause no problems in the beam. The load is generally within the depth of the beam where
concentrated loads are normally neglected for calculating bending and shear stresses in beams, and the
holes are locate outside the maximum shear stress plane which occurs at 24 inches below the top of the
beam.
I trust that this information will meet your needs. If you have any questions or require additional information
please do not hesitate to call me.
Sincerely,
R.L. MORRISON ENGINEERING CO.
Robert L.
