Resources are needed and
expended in the maintaining and building of facilities. Human
health is improved by park facilities providing opportunities to
exercise and reduce stress. Economic development is
enhanced by the proximity of parks and facilities improving
home values and increasing tourism. Transportation can be
improved by providing alternative routes to schools, homes
and business reducing urban pollution of air and water.
An evaluation of sustainability as part of each development
helps the city plan for the best solution and reduce impacts on
future generations by integrating building materials and
methods that promote environmental quality, economic vitality,
and social benefit through the design, construction and
operation of our parks.
Sustainable design evaluation encompasses the following
broad topics:
• efficient management of energy and water resources
• management of material resources and waste
• restoration and protection of environmental quality
• enhancement and protection of health and indoor
environmental quality
• reinforcement of natural systems
• analysis of the life cycle costs and benefits of materials
and methods
11
oc
