14
Barbara Hardman
1232 Grand Ave
Everett,WA 09231
I am writing in response to the notice of the proposed street vacation posted at 11th and Grand Ave. It
is my opinion that a street vacation makes sense only if a portion in the middle is preserved for a view
corridor.
Grand Ave is a very popular walking and running neighborhood. The sidewalks on that side of the
street do not have street breaks since it is not a through street. It runs along the bluff where glimpses of
the sound and mountains to the west, make it particularly appealing for pedestrians.
Additionally, this property is located in a designated historic neighborhood and the streetscape should
be preserved for posterity. The homes on either side are historic houses that contribute to the
streetscape as well has the history of this particular area. There is a good chance that If the entire
property was vacated at some point these homes could be torn down and replaced with "McMansions"
that are out of place and diminish the historic character of the neighborhood. There are many
examples where we have lost historic neighborhoods to the wrecking ball. A look at Taylor Ave and
Madrona Streets demonstrates what can happen when the view attracts those seeking McMansions and
every bit of available view property is used up in private development. Very little of the original
character of those neighborhoods or homes is in evidence today. Since we have very few historic
neighborhoods that have been recognized in historic overlays or districts, where much effort has
already gone into inventories and preservation efforts, every effort should be made to preserve the
character of those still intact. A view corridor of at least 15 feet is reasonable and affords the views for
the public and provides greater utility to the adjacent property owners at the same time.
One last note addresses Tourism. Grand Ave has been recognized in Sunset Magazine and elsewhere for
it's historical homes and neighborhood. It is a level street scape that draws people to it's appealing
setting. Tourists stroll through time on this Grand Avenue enjoying the sights and connecting with
Everett's historic mill town past. It is our responsibility to preserve and protect this limited resource for
all to enjoy not just an elite few.
Thank You for the opportunity to express my views on this subject as both a resident and commissioner.
Barbara Hardman
Commissioner
City of Everett Historical Commission
157
