FIRE PROTECTION STRATEGIC PLAN FOR EXISTING
STRUCTURES
This plan is based on the recognition that fire safety
cannot be achieved solely through the development of
large fire fighting forces.
The plan recognizes that the City of Everett Fire
Protection system is a network of many resources
including equipment, manpower and built-in fire
protection.
Almost daily we read of some serious fire occurring
somewhere that involved a hotel, an apartment,
institutional building, nursing or old age home,
dwelling or other inhabited structure in which someone
has lost their life. That these occurrences continue
to happen amply illustrates the danger existing in
buildings constructed under inadequate codes.
Life-Safety Requirements for Existing Buildings,
Appendix 1-A of the Uniform Fire Code as recommended,
by the International Fire Code Institute contains
requirements which are suitable for enforcement by all
municipalities. The appendix prescribes regulations
consistent with nationally recognized good practice for
the safeguarding to a reasonable degree of life and
property from conditions hazardous to life and property
in the use or occupancy of buildings or premises.
